This is going to be my last post on this blog for a while. New York, I will miss you. I will miss the free movies in parks all across the city, I will miss the free comedy shows with no drink minimums, I will miss my friends crazy enough to come with me to these shows on the far ends of the earth (including once in foreign land of Queens!).

But most of all, I think I will miss 130 Morningside Dr. Bryce, with her psychological issues has grown on me so much - It's going to take some getting used to go back to Bombay and deal with my 2 spoilt labradors who demand attention. Ron with all his gossip and therapy and telling me that I'm going to die single (while Al huffs in a sulk in the kitchen while fixing up his herbal tea after just fighting with Ron....for the 100000th time). Who will now be my therapist, telling me that I have ridiculously high standards and that I'm in the peak of my youth and I should enjoy more? *sigh*

And of course, there's Marie. Anything I say about her will not be enough. I've had such a good time living here - god knows this place was a godsend to me after living in that shithole in jersey. I'm going to miss the g&t's , jambalaya and marlene dietrich performances - and most of all, the random protests that she would advertise in the lift.

The Upper East Side will be so boring after this. *sigh*

Dinner with the ex

I had dinner with G tonight. Yes, after all my friends advised against it. He randomly called me on the day of the potluck to invite me over. I have no idea why he did this. In anycase, I told him that I was busy and he asked me if I was pissed at him, and I said yes. I didn't get into further details because I wouldve ended up burning the food I was cooking.

But getting to the point. I was pretty concerned as to why he wanted to meet me - I mean it was a pretty random phonecall after a long time. We met for dinner at this vietnamese place 'Monsoon' on the west side, and it was quite nice. I was pleasantly surprised - he was extraordinarily nice - picked up the tab, walked me home - maybe it was guilt?

But I was thinking, on my way back uptown after being stood up by friend Brian who flaked on me at the last minute, that I think I'll always be attracted to him. He is super gorgeous, but I think I'm more attracted to his simplicity. At some level, perhaps I envy that level of non ambition and simplicity - I've been raised to be tremendously succesful and ambitious - which, in my opinion, is not a bad thing at all. But it's just sometimes the grass is greener on the other side? Anyway, the point being I think I reached that level of emotional defeat today - where it's like I know I'll always have feelings for G - and the chemistry is undeniable given the circumstances of our meeting - but it's obviously not meant to be, and meeting him once every 2 months is not a bad thing. It's like I feel that today was emotional closure for me - where I could actually dine with him as friends, and control the expression of my emotions to the extent where I realized that nothing will become of it.

Just random thoughts...

In other news going insane trying to get everything together for Monday - the shuttle picks me up at 2pm. Still so much packing/moving to be done!!!

First of all, thank you. I don't think I've had so much traffic at my site. Ever. It also means that now half of the whole world knows everything about my life, which is not nescessarily a good thing, but whatever.

Secondly, guys, please don't apologize and get defensive. I'm not high falutin' critic or anything, I'm just a regular person who went to the show and wasn't pleased. I'm sure there were other people who enjoyed the show - I just wasn't one of them. This does not mean that comics don't progress later on and eventually become geniuses - god knows Tapan Trivedi may be the next Johnny Lever - but on that day, he didn't impress me.

And now, somehow, I feel that the Gurus of Comedy show will include several cracks at Gujju bloggers....

- Weather was great the last coupla days - so spent them exploring central park - super fun! Did not get picked up.

- Posting pre-pubescent pics on blog probably was not such a good idea considering randoms from friendster visit my blog. But then am not really getting much anyway. Besides, I wan't to date someone for me.

- Went to random 'gurus of comedy' show last night. Overpriced, and can someone please tell Tapan Trivedi he is not funny. In fact, when he was performing, I swear I heard crickets (and this is new york - we don't have crickets). Paul Varghese was funny, but the rest were very eh. Also got drunk (and I mean pissed) thanks to fudness and ended up home. Alone. And then had a failed attempt at phonesex (I couldn't stop laughing - donno why - phonesex is weird).

Gay Salsa Dancing Lesson

Now that I have all this free time on my hands, I've been perusing the Time Out for free things like a horny gay boy at the roxy on a saturday night. So, I was thrilled when I came across a free salsa and east coast swing dance class at this studio called 'Stepping Out', which specializes in gay dance classes. And so I took my elmer fudness and we set out to burn up the floor. Of course there were only 2 cute guys there - and they were together. The rest were all oldies or lesbians. But since partners were rotated, it was actually very fun - without ulterior phone number getting motives.

And some relevant issues were brought up in same sex dancing- it's easier to lead a woman than a man, and sometimes it feels really icky when you're dancing with a bear (hairy man), and you can feel his back hair through 2 layers (although I could've totally been imagining this). Also, it was really fun, because there were no gender stereotypes - everybody led and followed, so it was fun :). Plus watching E.Fudness' 2 left feet was hillarious - poor chap - but he definitely tried and did get better by the end of the night.
We had dosas for dinner, and since the weather was so great, walked up 60 blocks while chatting about g, his ex, desi boys and a lot more. Also, the eye candy on the upper east isn't that bad - so moving there is not nescessarily going to be a socially bad thing.

So undergrad was not exactly the most pleasant experience for me. Shoving a left winger into a right winger's box kind of cramped my style. Which is not saying I didn't make friends and have a good time, but when I left I thought I was done with it. Man, was I wrong. Who knew there were so many of us in a little school like UDCT (or UD Shitty as I like to refer to it), and they concieved a way to connect (well, right wingers perhaps, but everyone in that school was a goddamn genius, so I don't know why I'm surprised) .

But anywa, Nonie introduces me to (d)Orkut and somehow manages to get me to join. God knows how or why - but being useless really gives me nothing better to do - and so I did.

And OMG the WHOLE DAMN SCHOOL IS ON THERE - I mean senior's seniors, junior's juniors and god knows who else. In the last 4 days I have receieved 11 friend requests, god knows how many 'scraps' and found random people who I probably would've forgotten about. Now I wish I had this kind of luck with cute boys on friendster!!

In recovering from sore throat acquired by excessive drinking, sex and jacketless walks of shame in the cold, I discovered some fun stuff :

Metroblogging Mumbai , a blog that basically comments on whats going on in Bombay, and was most entertained to read that the removal of 25paisa coins is causing quite a stir in busses. I remember one time a marwari friend of mine who was in a cartooning workshop with me had an argument with a bus conductor over 5 paisa. Apparently the conductor gave him 5 pasia less, and so he created a hullabaloo until someone in the train offered him 5 paisa to shut up. And they call me kanjoos!! At least I was paid 10 to stop singing :D.

The other is Sex and Mumbai, a look into a Bomgay's personal sex life. It's amazing how interesting some random person's life can be. Um. Ok just realized people probably say the same thing when they read my blog. Oh well, who am I kidding, I'm an attention whore, and I love it!!

God knows I never thought I'd say this , but I have had 3 men in the last 3 days - and now I am so oversexed I may throw up even if brad pitt asks me to have sex with him. Well, maybe not brad pitt - but you get the general idea.

In this very 'now that I have a month off and I'm going to live up my youth' I've been dating up a storm with anyone I find remotely interesting. Have been to the galleries in chelsea and seen some excellent prints with an architect who designs museums, a surrealistic pseudo-noveau sucky ass boring play with a columbia theater student, and the usual rounds of bars like therapy and g lounge. And somehow - alcohol has driven me to become drutty - drunk and slutty.

So date #1 actually happened last week - this guy on friendster, whom I'm not really interested in, sent me a message. Theater grad student had tickets to this play 'fragment', which btw is only slightly less entertaining than watching my dog bryce take a poo at 9am when I'm barely awake. In anycase, there was no chemistry, but the guy turned out to be really nice into all things south asian (surprise surprise) including bollywood. So, I thought I'd end up making friends with him, since I don't date actors (how can you trust someone who lies for a living?). Which is exactly what I said on our second date, and he was totally cool with it. Of course, 2 beers and one vodka down, we were on the couches at posh totally getting it on (and yes, we were completely clothed - how slutty do you think I am?!!)

Date #2 was a gay.com hookup whom I met at therapy. Kind of chubby, russian dude who pretty much spoke too much. Again, curry queen, except that he spoke more than the actor dude. Same story - drunk, horny, except I actually did the walk of shame and got back home by 3-ish.

Last night I went for ice age with neil 'neausy neausy' patel, a friend from bombay who I will refrain from calling a slut given my behavior over the last few days, but yes, he was affectionately called the 'yari road slut' back home. In anycase, he smuggled in 2 small bottles of grey goose which we put in a small coke, which we sipped while watching ice age 2. The movie was great, and then we headed to the g lounge. My friend Fahad had a hard week, so the purpose of the night was to get him drunk, distract him from his woes and eventually get him laid. Of course, 2 vodka cranberry's down and I was getting hit on by 2 guys at the same time. Got drunker and ended up having to do the walk of shame again.

So, god knows what worm has worked its way inside my head to suddenly make me so bold and mischevous, but I can definitely say that I think I may throw up if I see another penis. And I mean from my mouth. Is this a sign that my youth is nearing it's end?

However, in other news, my brother is moving to San Fran on July 31 to finally live with his to-be wife and get a job. He will be missed. Or rather, the free movies and the marathon cooking sessions will be missed.

So had a great four course lunch at Dawat, this fancy shmancy Indian food restaurant which has Madhur Jaffery as a consultant on the east side. My lab tech and tutor in the lab, Avani, moves on to the pharmaceutical world this Friday, so my boss took the whole lab out to lunch. The food, although underspiced (on request), still managed to be delish. And of course, free-ness made it taste even better.

Walked crosstown because the weather was so fine, and then filled out a volunteer form at the LGBT center - they said they'll contact me within a week - so still labbing in the meanwhile. But the weather was so great, that I walked 20 blocks just because its been so long!!

In other news, have a date tomorrow.

Summer in Kenya

Of the 15 odd days that I'm to be in Bombay, 5 will be in Kenya. Which leaves me 10 days in Bombay (give or take). My dad is getting a sponsored trip courtesy some pharmaceutical company, and they have graciously allowed me to stow away. I'm not really sure where we're going outside of the fact that we're based in Nairobi. This is pretty exciting news, considering my favorite Rhode Island roomie Naina was born and raised in Nairobi - so will have her family as local guides to suggest where to go and eat. I'll be there May 6-11, and I'm quite looking forward to the trip.

I'm not really sure how it's going to be when I go back. Navneet went back in the summer and said things were exactly the same - but it's been 2 years for me, and I have only a handful of friends left there. The last time I was there, I felt that I had very little in common with them - and that was after living in Rhode Island where I was detached from the real world. After living in New York, which is abreast with global politics, intellectual conversations and leftist ideals - I'm not sure how I'm going to react when faced with staunch conservatives like the family elders. Anyway, at least there'll be good food :). Which is something I'm definitely looking forward to.

In other news, I'm thinking of volunteering at the LGBT center - what with so much free time on my hands. This way perhaps I'll manage to get a few phone numbers as well. We shall see - will drop in tomorrow/day after and check it out.

Sholay, Sabina and Aging

And so there was Sholay this weekend. And so I went. Of course the music was great, I ended up looking hot and it was all in all a fun time. And for the first time I actually got mauled - by someone who apparently works at Goldman Sachs (a 5'7-ish pipsqueak) who forcefully tried to grab my head, crobar Radhika and Paula (who drove up all the way from DC to see me) off me and then put his hand up my shirt and try to feel me up. Of course if there wasn't other drama (the details of which I shall not go into here bec it doesn't involve my life), I would have been all traumatized. But since there was a diversion, I let the guy pass. Although it was flattering - in a very 'cool, guys are trying to maul me' kind of way. *sigh* I'm weird. And have too much time on my hands.

But in other news, I think I managed to see so many desi friends this weekend, perhaps not at the same time - but they all showed up - fahad, shabu shabu assmati (who came down from boston and ate very little even though i insisted she eat more), flaky boobsie boobaneshwar boobinca (who we now need to get a phone appointment to talk with), Nanguskar and Doodeshwar who came over to watch family guy and half of constant gardener (which, btw, is a pretty good movie - little bit formula-ish, but I would def recommend it).

And finally, I'm back to being the lukha central again - although I'm going to try and volunteer at the LGBT center in chelsea. I've also wanted to bartend for a while - perhaps that'll get me some good dates. I need me some good dates. This whole quarter life crisis is disturbing - I'm nearing 25, and I haven't been in a serious relationship ever - also because I spent the major part of my youth in Bombay where i refused to indulge in the incestuous gaybombay circle of relationships. But still, I just think it's about time I began to settle down.

I mean what with being an Ivy Leaguer and all now (sorry - had to throw that in ;))

Things I have noticed

Having been in Manhattan for the past year without travelling (jersey doesn't count), I have noticed the following:

- Other cities have roads - like really big, wide ones

- The air smells different

- I will eventually settle in San Fran (I just know it)

- People in the other cities are nicer, and not as cynical as New Yorkers (Some random woman actually gave us a quarter for the meter because she noticed we were out).

- Someday when I'm 50, I too will be telling stories to kids which go something like 'When I used to live in Manhattan...'

- Life in New York is, in fact, a lot like FRIENDS - minus the unrealistic budget and obseesive hanging out at coffee shops

- New Yorkers are neurotic. Including me. You have to be.

- Living in New York makes you develop esoteric and eclectic tastes which you will probably never find anywhere else in the world

I'm finally back in the city!!

The last two weeks have been so hectic, but oh-so-fun!! Was in Minneapolis 2 weeks ago, courtesy The U of MN for an interview - who knew that a little midwestern town could be so fun! Of course, hung out lots with my Nonie baby, but also got wined and dined par excellence by the university - got to see the campus inclduing the super Frank Gehry Bldg (Weissman Museum). The city, albeit quaint, seemed pretty liberal, culturally educated and in general, nice and small. No doubt, I'm definitely going to visit again.

Spent the last week in San Fran - super duper fun with mom, brother and lata (sis in law). We took a day trip to Monterey (yes, I did have Monterey Jack for breakfast with my Jalapeno omlette), where we saw the jellyfishes, had dinner in santa cruz - ate like gluttons and was just really good drama free family time! Of course, it hailed in the city - for the first time in 20 years - and the Californians were all going bezerk, but it was entertaining nonetheless. And yes, I am moving to san fran once I'm done with my PhD.

Speaking of PhDs, I had an interview at Cornell on Monday - God I hope I get in - imagine doing research at sloane kettering and getting the bonus of an ivy league degree - *sigh*. In anycase, trying not to get too excited about it - let me get accepted first and we'll take it from there. Either ways, at least I know I'm definitely coming back to the city!

Rang De Basanti and Minnesotta

So went to see the new Aamir Khan hindi movie, Rang de Basanti (Colors of Spring), with my brother last sunday - and let me just tell you - I was blown away. It's unbelievable the way the director, Rakeysh Mehra, has managed to capture the sentiment and apathy of the youth in India, and show people what the country needs. To say that a surge of nationalism rushed through me during the movie is an understatement. I don't want to say too much more because I may end up giving away details of the plot, but in a nutshell, Kya zabardast picture hai!!! Anyone who's desi needs to go see it. I'm going to go again - it is superb.

And in other news, I am going to Minnesotta from Mar 2-5. The U of MN has invited me to minneapolis to interview with them, which means I get an all expense paid trip for 4 days to see my Nonie! (I should be more excited about the interview, but for some reason, I'm more excited to navneet!) In anycase, I hope some good comes of it.

Now, I'm not one to self pity, but the last month has been just painful. I was eagerly looking forward to hearing about my decision from NYU, and today they sent me an email saying that I'm 'on hold' - which is neither an acceptance nor a rejection - and they'll let me know in a MONTH!!!! AARRRGGHHH!! I don't know how much more of this I can take - this whole deal is so stressful - maybe I should just quite everything, move back to India and 'do business' and get married to some woman who I'm never going to sleep with.

And, to make things worse, the virgin megastore theater at times sq which shows hindi movies has shut down. Waaaahh!!!

Bought my ticket for San Fran yesterday - flying on frontier airlines - has anyone ever heard of them?
Also got my first rejection letter from UCLA - wasn't really expecting to get in anyway - didn't get a good vibe when I called up the faculty - they weren't particularly international student friendly. Oh well, there goes my free trip to LA. At least I'm not in limbo about them anymore.

So the amount I hate the american healthcare system cannot be expressed in words. So I've been having really bad lower abdominal pains, and so decided to make use of my NYU health insurance and went to the doctor. But of course, I couldn't make use of it - because it expired when I graduated and there's no way that I can resign up for it bec it's past the Jan 8 deadline. Why don't they tell you this or send you some reminder??!! Because, the fucked up old insurance bitch at the counter said, "you should have read the guide book". Who the FUCK reads the fucking guidebook?!!!! Honestly!!

In anycase, my pain was pretty bad, so had to see a doctor, who prescribed antibiotics. Now, the stash I had from home expired in 2004. So spent the whole day calling up everyone I know asking them if they had it, and then finally going to 3 duane 'why-the-fuck-are-they-pharmacies-if-they-cant-give-you-the-meds-in-the-same-day' reade and not getting anywhere. Went to a rite aid finally, on 110th st, and realized that the doctor prescribed the more expensive, rarer analog of the drug (thank god I'm a pharmacist). So called my cousin doctor to represcribe the one that I needed (the cheaper one) and got 3 days worth of the drug. The rest is being sent to me via an uncle in philly.

Ugh! I hate the healthcare system sooooo much!! Give me bombay, where I can just go down the street and get anything without a prescription.

And so my NYU interview is done. I will know, by Feb 1, whether I will be going there or not. While I was there I met a girl who had heard from Cornell last week, which means they're probably done with sending out their interview invites, and I didn't get one. Which, I think, means that it's not an option anymore.
So yes, I am kind of upset that I didn't get into Cornell, but I guess I did kinda expect this. When I went to meet profs there, he told me that my application was competitive, but they weren't fond of international students too much. I know I'm not super smart with 5 years of research experience (like a lot of the students there), but It would've been nice to interview. Oh well, I tried, que sera sera.

Limbo

So being in limbo really sucks. Especially when you don't have a job, and are volunteering in a lab part time just so that you don't go crazy. And what's more, the anxiety of not knowing where you'll be next just amplifies as the day goes on. This is, perhaps, the first time in my life where I don't have a backup plan (and marrying nicole doesn't count).
I have my interview with NYU Med for my PhD today. I am so anxious and snappy, that I'm half worried that I'll start snapping at the interviewer if (s)he starts asking me stupid questions (obviously I wont - but you get the picture). On the bright side, they are wining and dining us for 5 meals, which means I'll save money on those meals (really have to think about these things when you don't have a steady income) - and tomorrow night includes free booze, which is pretty damn sweet. Also, they're taking us for Avenue Q tonight - a musical that I actually want to see - which is good.
Also, on Saturday going over to the brother's to cook, which, I'm sure, is going to be stressful. There's going to be the 'have you thought about your life' talk - ugh- hate older brothers - like I'm not stressing out enough that I need to have it shoved in my head that I'm unemployed fifty times by stupid brother. Then again, maybe he wont - he just got back from a month long holiday in california. *sigh* wishful thinking.
Anyway, moral of the story being I hate being in limbo, and I hate having heard from one school and no others - it's so damn annoying.

Rollercoaster Week!

So after a miserable christmas eve at the G bar and Roxy with Neil Patel (who managed to 2 blow jobs and a foursome in 3 hours while I got nothing), the rest of the week wasn't so bad.

Christmas day, I had an extravagant and super delicious dinner at my friend Fahad's house with a couple of friends of his from work- Pakistani chicken, kababs, dal, japanese egg custard, sushi, guacamole and lots and lots of wine.

The rest of the week was kinda chilled out, since the genomics facility chick was off for a few days leaving our samples in limbo, and me labless for a week. But Friday was super duper fun - Radhika, my crazy friend from Bombay who now lives in Oklahoma, came in while I was getting pissed drunk at my friend Cecelia's wedding at the battery park gardens.

The wedding, a brazil + italian one was super fun with awesome food, a couple totally in love and super cool retro music. Was there with Lotte and Nicole, and we had soo much fun partying, I reached home at 5-30am! Also, interestingly, Nicole caught the bride's bouquet, and I caught the groom's garter (which is the male prophecy of being the next to get married). I have no idea how drunk I was, and what possesed me to even play in the pool - but honestly, being as superstitious as I am, I drew two conclusions - either America is going to legalize gay marriage and I'm going to get one of those quick spur-of-the-moment weddings or I'm going to have to get married for a green card (to nicole) - neither of which seem very likely. Unless of course, a man sweeps me off my feet, or I don't get into a single grad school that I applied to.

So after 4 hours of sleep, Radhika jumping on me woke me up Saturday morning, and we spent the day catching up on gossip and figuring out new years plans - which included quickly meeting bhai and leta at his friend boomba's house (boomba cooked a delicious feast) and then heading over to dead gay bar posh, where we met Nicole, Lot, Alex and Stanis (gay couple friends of Fahad) and Sabina.

OMG - this was probably the whoriest new years I've ever lived through - ended up kissing a black queen for a ciggie, kissing Lot (with tongue) for some bizzare reason which I was too drunk to remember (it was the most asexual kiss ever!) and then , for the rest of the night,making out with this cute Dominican doctor who lives in New Haven. [Note to friends : when you see me hitting on/ making out with some guy - I AM NOT A MUSEUM EXHIBIT!! i.e., Don't pretend to 'just pass by', stop and stare and then sigh 'aww' ]. In anycase, was snogging with this dude till the bar actually shut down, after which Sabina, Radhika and me went over to Alex and Stanis' house where we had even more booze (vodka and coke) while Stanis molested Radhika's boobs (all I remember is stanis on top radhika playing with her boobs and referring to her as 'boobs' for the rest of the night - and Alex slapping Sabina's ass every two minutes).

In any case we reached home at 7am and I've been spending all the time since then just chilling out! Phew!

I love New York!!! :)

p.s. still trying to come up with a New Years resolution...any ideas?
