Random catching ups..

- Weather was great the last coupla days - so spent them exploring central park - super fun! Did not get picked up.

- Posting pre-pubescent pics on blog probably was not such a good idea considering randoms from friendster visit my blog. But then am not really getting much anyway. Besides, I wan't to date someone for me.

- Went to random 'gurus of comedy' show last night. Overpriced, and can someone please tell Tapan Trivedi he is not funny. In fact, when he was performing, I swear I heard crickets (and this is new york - we don't have crickets). Paul Varghese was funny, but the rest were very eh. Also got drunk (and I mean pissed) thanks to fudness and ended up home. Alone. And then had a failed attempt at phonesex (I couldn't stop laughing - donno why - phonesex is weird).

- Backpacking trip is probably going to be reorganized bec Divya's dates are being shuffled around. More here.

  • I saw the Gurus in Chicago tonight. They all did a GREAT job. Tapan Trivedi and Raj Sharma rocked the HOUSE. Dan Nainan did one joke which I had seen in a movie - NOT GOOD. In any case Paul is the KING. Low energy but still awesome. I caught up with them after the first show and talked to Tapan for a bit. He mentioned the NYC show and said that it was a low show and that his 9/11 bit was something he should not have done so close to where it happened. Raj was fantastic and off the cuff funny. Don't give in to one bad show people. These are our homies . Show them love.

  • Everybody's entitled to an opinion, and I thought it just plain sucked. I've been to other desi standup shows where I've laughed till I got stomach cramps - and I'm sorry, but this one, for the price I paid, gave me cramps for an entirely different reason.

Each to his own, and personally, I thought they all sucked. Give me Vidur Kapur, Vijai Nathan or Russel Peters anyday.

  • Correct. You are correct about Russell and Vidur (haven't seen Vijai Nathan yet ) . All I am saying is that just because they had a low show in NYC does not mean they are NOT funny. Just had a low show which you happened to be at. Don't bash our homies . Give them chances. God knows we need more desi comics.

Raj ,Paul,Tapan are all the up and coming breed. The next generation. Think Russell as either Cosby then Raj will be Martin Lawrence
    Tapan will be Chris Rock
    Paul will be Eddie Murphy.

P.S. The earlier post was mine too.

  • Well, they may have had a low show in NYC - but I know I'm never going to pay a cent to see any of them again. Sorry, they lost my business. Especially Tapan. Ugh. I didn't think he was funny at all.

  • Whats going on bro. It's Paul. I went from you considering me "funny" in your blog.. to two comments later "completely sucking". Damn blogspot. Yo, just on my behalf, I'm sorry you didn't dig the show. I don't dictate the prices. I didn't write the other comics' acts. I can only speak for myself. You're right. To each his own. Comedy's like music. I treat it as an artistic expression of myself. And people either love me or hate me. Sorry you hate it bro. Atleast support those you dig..Vidur-Vijai-Russell. Every little bit of support counts from the desi community. Take care

  • Hey Paul - whadya know :) I'm surprised by the reach of my blog. In anycase, I thought you were funniest of the lot, but the show in general completely sucked (and im not just saying that because you commented on my comment). I truly couldn't stand Tapan - maybe I'm just dumb, but I didn't get any of his jokes.

But like you said, it's like music, sometimes you get it, sometimes you dont.

Good luck and thanks for the comment :)

  • I can't believe the number of people who sent this blog to me.For the first and the last time - Bombay Gujju - it was a bad show for me. The lesson learnt is that not to do a 9/11 bit 3 blocks from where it happened. That has been my opening bit for 4 years and has always worked. For the record 9/11 IS my birthday. Not getting an audience and bombing is standard. No comic worth his while hasn't bombed. Seinfield said that in the first 5 years 50% bombing is OK. I am still finding my voice and working with seasoned guys like Raj and Paul has helped my act a LOT. Essentially it has opened up a door to a side of me that I have never looked at. I am sorry that you had a bad experience but as far as I know it was worse for me. Its far worse to be on stage with what happened than off it. I am sorry you had a bad time but it was all me not Paul or Dan or Raj so leave them off it. We have all been doing good since then.

Lastly thanks to Aarati,Jaidev,Rajshekhar,Mukta,Shweta,Sanjana,Raghav,Vidya et all for showing your support.

For every one person that writes a blog there are 12 emails (atleast to me) that say I did a good job.

    Sincerely,
    Tapan Trivedi

  • Tapan,

I'm not one to think a show is bad just because of one comedian - I honestly thought that I didn't have a good time at the show outside of Paul. That's just my opinion. Why do I have to keep defending it? People may agree, and people may not. And it wasn't just the 9/11 joke - it was everything - I just didn't find it funny. Maybe it was my mistake to come in with great expectations after seeing Vidur Kapur, Russel Peters and Vijai Nathan - but I honestly didn't have a good time. And you don't need to apologize for that - each to his own.

  • This is Dan, and I would like to defend Tapan's use of his 9/11 joke. Give him a break, for crying out loud, that is his actual birthday.

Also, I have no idea which joke I did that you saw in a movie, but my question to you is, so what? It is impossible for me to know every joke that I have ever done that might be in a movie - do you honestly expect me to watch every movie that comes out? I rarely go to movies and I don't even own a television.

When I first started doing comedy I was doing a joke that years later appeared in a Toyota commercial. Does that mean that Toyota should forever be prohibited from doing that commercial?

One thing you need to realize is that comedy is a very difficult business and it's not as easy as choosing some moneymaking field job like doctor, lawyer, pharmacists, finance guy, whatever, and more power to you. You can sit back and take potshots at us creative types all you want but as you can see we will try to defend ourselves.

As comedians, we don't have a clearly defined career path, college, standardized tests, graduate school, whatever. Everything we do on stage we create ourselves and we have nobody to help us, and that is especially magnified in the Indian community where the creative person is completely outcast (of course, until they start making big money in which case the Indian community embraces them - see Russell Peters or Norah Jones).

As for myself, I'm pretty happy with what I've accomplished in comedy - right now I am earning three times what your average doctor makes. But it's funny how everyone thinks if you're comedian you don't make any money, and if everybody wants to think that, hey, that's fine with me.

Also, all of us are at various levels of development, and that is true when you go to any comedy show. Russell has been doing comedy for 17 years and paid his dues, and he is one hell of a nice guy and deserves all of his success. I have been doing it for four years and change, and as far as the other comedians you saw some have been doing it for less, and some for more. I know that Vijai has been doing it for 10 years. So you can expect her to be twice as funny as myself. You can expect Russell to be more than three times funny as me.
